Friday, April 19

Neuroscience curriculum topic of psychiatry expert's talk

​Dr. Michael J. Travis, associate professor and program director of residency training programs at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will give the UMMC Psychiatry Grand Rounds presentation, "The National Neuroscience Curriculum - Preparing for the Future of Psychiatry," at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

Hopkins epidemiology prof to cover dietary supplements​

Dr. Eliseo Guallar, professor of epidemiology and medicine in the Department of Epidemiology and Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland, will give the UMMC Division of Nephrology Renal Grand Rounds presentation, "Dietary Supplements in Health, CKD and ESRD," from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, April 19, in Medicine Hellems Conference Room L507 on the fifth floor of the Clinical Sciences Building.

Millsaps religious studies faculty to explain Passover, Seder meal

Dr. James Bowley, professor and chair of religious studies at Millsaps College, will give the Faith Forum seminar, "Is That an Easter Egg on the Passover Table? And Other Passover Questions," at noon on Friday, April 19, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Oregon CV expert to discuss cerebral small vessel disease

Dr. Nabil J. Alkayed, chairman of cardiovascular medicine, professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and director of research, Knight Cardiovascular Institute, Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Therapeutic Targeting of a Novel Eicosanoid Receptor in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease," at noon on Monday, April 22, in room 6A.

Memphis psychology faculty to review risky decision-making

Dr. Nicholas W. Simon, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Memphis, will give the UMMC Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Modeling Risky Decision-making in Rats: Implications for Addiction," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, in room N318 (3A) in the North Wing.

Emory faculty to explore ethical patient care research challenges

Dr. Neal Dickert, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Emory University School of Medicine, will give the UMMC Department of Medicine Grand Rounds Nancy O'Neal Tatum Ethics Conference presentation, "Respecting Patients in Tough Situations: Ethical Challenges in Acute Care Research," at noon on Tuesday, April 23, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Surgery chief resident to explore damage control laparotomy

Dr. Laura Wittwer, chief resident in the UMMC Department of Surgery, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, "Damage Control Laparotomy: History, Management of Open Abdomens and Fascial Closure," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in room CW 206 of the Classroom Wing.

Anatomical donors to be honored at Ceremony of Thanksgiving

​Anatomical donors – individuals who gave their bodies to the Medical Center for health professional education and research – will be honored at the annual Ceremony of Thanksgiving scheduled for noon on Wednesday, April 24, in the UMMC Cemetery. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

Physiology research fellow to talk NR4A2 myocardial remodeling

Dr. Sadia Ashraf, postdoctoral research fellow in the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Role of NR4A2 in Myocardial Remodeling," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Live performances to highlight daylong Healing Arts presentation

As part of a Patient Experience Week celebration, the Office of Patient Experience will host "Healing Arts," a daylong series of live performances including ballet, piano and poetry, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the University Hospital lobby.

Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, vice dean for medical education and professor of emergency medicine, will present the Last Lecture 2019 at noon on Wednesday, May 1, in the student union.

The lecture is presented by the Office of Alumni Affairs, the Student Alumni Representatives and the Associated Student Body.

HIT Center seeks UMMC participants for initial PITCH event

​The Health Innovation and Transformation Center is seeking UMMC participants for the HIT Center's first Partners Innovating Technology to Change Healthcare competition scheduled from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

UMMC faculty, staff and students can submit their ideas involving technology and health care. Selected individuals and/or teams will have consultants to help them develop their ideas. Chosen candidates will have the opportunity to propose their business concepts or ideas in a 60-to-90-second "elevator" pitch. Final participants will pitch to a panel of judges and "angel" investors.

Dr. Kevin Freeman, associate professor and director of the Office of Medical Student and Resident Research in the Division of Neurobiology and Behavior Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “Understanding Barriers to Specialty Substance Abuse Treatment among Latinos,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in conference room D on the second floor of the student union.
